FAQs

What are the smoke alarm requirements for QLD households?

All smoke alarms must first and foremost be photoelectric and fully comply with Australian Standard 3786-2014. In addition, they should not have an ionisation sensor and be less than 10 years old. Furthermore, the alarms must function properly throughout testing to ensure a high level of safety. To maximise the warning system's performance, the alarms must be linked to every other essential smoke alarm in the house, triggering them all at the same time in the event of a fire.

I have an old alarm that needs replacing. What should I know?

There is a specific need for each current smoke alarm that is changed after January 1, 2017. In such circumstances, the new alarm must be photoelectric and comply with Australian Standard 3786-2014. These requirements not only ensure the highest level of safety, but they also promote consistency in safety equipment throughout all Australian properties.

Do smoke alarms need to be hard wired in Qld?

All existing private homes, townhouses and units will require photoelectric interconnected smoke alarms. These must be either a hardwired (eg. 240v) or non-removable 10 year battery powered type alarm.

How many smoke detectors do I need in a house in Qld?

When it comes to properly fitting out your home with smoke alarms, the following areas are required by law to have a working photoelectric smoke alarm:

  • On each floor;

  • In every bedroom;

  • In corridors that connect bedrooms to the remainder of the house;

  • If no hallway exists, between the bedroom and other portions of the floor; and

  • If there are no bedrooms on a floor, at least one smoke alarm must be put in the most likely departure path.

Can you install smoke alarms in all Brisbane suburbs?

Yes. At VF Smoke Alarms, we provide service to homes all across Brisbane. We all work and live in Brisbane, and we take great pleasure in assisting locals with safeguarding their households and families by providing only the highest quality of service and highest quality of smoke alarms.

What is the brand of Smoke Alarm we recommend and why?

Here at VF, we personally recommend the entire range of Red Smoke Alarms. They are our chosen brand when it comes to installations and replacements. A genuine alternative to some large brands, Red is the only brand of smoke alarms in Australia that come with a 10-year warranty across the entire range. Red smoke alarms are of the highest quality and are certified to the necessary Australian standards. Red smoke alarms are perfect to meet the new Queensland smoke alarm laws as all Red Smoke Alarms are photoelectric.

What is the fine for non-compliance with the smoke alarm laws in Qld?

According to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ), a non-compliance or breach of the current smoke alarm laws in QLD can carry a maximum fine of 5 penalty units (currently $667.25) with additional penalty units attributed for multiple breaches.

CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING

Service You Can Trust

Licensed Professionals Providing Quality Service

Landlord and Tenant Responsibilities

It is the landlord's responsibility to install and replace smoke alarms in rental homes, but it is the tenant's responsibility to clean, test, and replace any smoke alarm batteries. Ensuring that all smoke alarm work is done by a professional is the best way to ensure compliance.

Fire Safety Plan

After you've put your alarms in, make sure everyone in your house knows what to do if they sound. Understanding escape routes, having a safe meeting point outside of the home, and practising escape drills on a regular basis are all part of a fire safety plan.

Hard-Wired Smoke Alarms

Consider smoke alarms that may be hard-wired into your home's electrical system for a consistent power supply. In the event of a power outage, these alarms contain battery backups to ensure that your smoke alarms continue to function. It ensures fire safety at all times.

Interconnectivity

Interconnectivity is how modern smoke alarms work. When one sensor detects smoke, all interconnected alarms sound, providing the best chance of safe escape. This is particularly important in larger homes where a fire in one area might not immediately trigger a distant smoke alarm.
